Sheraton Goes Smoke-Free
Sheraton and Four Points hotels will implement a smoke-free policy at more than 300 hotels and resorts throughout the U.S., Caribbean and Canada. This includes all public areas as well as guestrooms. The new policy also follows in the footsteps of their sister Starwood brand, Westin, which in 2006 was the first hotel chain to go smoke-free. To prepare for the new policy, approximately 8,000 smoking rooms will undergo an extensive cleaning process. This includes deep cleaning all soft goods, and treating all hard surfaces, walls and carpets to eliminate allergens, replacing air filters and deep cleaning all air conditioning units.

As much as I would love for this to be a smoke-free society, since I do not smoke myself and I am allergic to cigarette smoke, I think not having any place for smokers to go is not right. My boss smokes and it is getting harder and harder for me to book him hotel rooms. He, like all the smokers I know, has no plans to quit, no matter how inconvenient we make it for him. There should be someplace for them to go to satisfy their addiction, an addiction that until recently our government was all for.

It's bloody well about time. There is nothing more distasteful than walking into a hotel lobby or access hallways/elevators, than to smell the residue of cigarette smoke that may have wafted in from the smoking areas with the users. Being extremely allergic to smoke, my lungs are sensitive to smoke, whether primary or secondary. If smokers cannot help themselves to quit this dirty habit, then they deserve to be segregated or ousted to an inconvenient area in order that health-conscious people not be subjected to their health-destructive activity.
