More Strikes Set for France

Much like a cold that just won’t go away, strikes in France continue to torment travelers, with unions announcing two more national days of protest Oct. 28 and Nov. 6. That’s along with a number of rolling strikes, which are impacting everything from air travel and schools to gas stations and roadways.
The constitutionally-protected walk outs are expected to last at least another two weeks, but with anti-pension reform sentiments at an all-time high, the disruptions could continue even longer.  Protests have interrupted flights, with air traffic controllers walking off the job and demonstrators blocking key routes to airports. Strikes at refineries have interrupted the country’s fuel supply, causing at least 20% of gas stations to run dry and forcing the government to release reserve fuel stocks.
Even celebrities have been impacted, with Lady Gaga rescheduling her Oct. 22 and 23rd concerts in Paris. A statement on her Web site reads, in part, that cancellations were necessary “as a result of the logistical difficulties due to the strikes in France.”
Those who can’t take the rock-star route of rescheduling should definitely keep an eye on their flights.
